Prosecutors in Modena have requested 14 years and eight months in prison in a case involving the rape of a 54-year-old woman and two alleged attempted sexual assaults, Remix News reported on 6 October, citing Il Resto del Carlino.
The report identifies the defendant as an Italian citizen of Moroccan origin. It says his defence acknowledged a confession while disputing the proposed punishment. Remix reported that a judicial decision was expected on 2 November. The prosecutor’s request should not be described as a sentence already imposed.
RAI’s regional newsroom separately reported the requested term on 6 October. It described the defendant as twenty years old; the reporting cited by Remix used nineteen. We have omitted his age from the headline because those accounts differ.
Editorial view: women’s safety deserves concrete action
Protecting women means effective investigations, support after an attack and a punishment determined through a fair legal process. Public debate should keep those obligations in view when attention turns to the offender’s background.
Our immigration policy position is restrictive. But Italian citizenship is a material fact here: this defendant cannot accurately be presented as a foreign national simply because of Moroccan ancestry. Any argument about immigration or integration should use the actual facts of the case.
